Barry Ife is Cervantes Professor of Spanish and Acting Principal of King's College London. He graduated from King's with a
first class degree in Spanish in 1968, and was awarded a PhD from Birkbeck College in 1984. From 1969 to 1972 he was lecturer
in Spanish at Nottingham University, and from 1973-1988 was lecturer in Spanish at Birkbeck College. He was appointed to the
Cervantes Chair at King's in 1988, was head of the School of Humanities from 1989 to 1998, and has since been Vice-Principal.
In 2000, he was appointed CBE for services to Hispanic Studies.
Barry Ife's main research interests are in early-modern prose fiction, Cervantes in particular, and Spanish instrumental music
from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. He also publishes on early colonial literature, and since 1999 has been directing
an AHRB-funded research project 'Towards a History of the Novel in Early-Modern Spain: Sources, Narrative Techniques and Lexis in the Chronicles of the New
World'. He is currently working on two books: Re-writing the Conquest, which will document the re-working of old-world sources and motifs in new-world writing; and The Origins of the Novel in Spain, planned to commemorate the centenary of the publication of Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo's OrÃgenes de la novela (1905).
Barry Ife collaborates with Dr Trudi Darby on Anglo-Spanish literary relations and with Dr Bob Goodwin on Food and culture. He publishes widely on aspects of Cervantes and has promoted the use of electronic methods of text analysis and the publication of electronic texts.
