The text includes an Italian translation of Arnalt and Lucenda, by way of a practice dialogue. It begins at sig. I 6v and ends Aa8r; it is printed in parallel columns with the Spanish text on the right and translation on the left. Claude Hollyband is an alias for Claude de Desainliens. Cf. Text ID no. 74 and 163.v.
The "argument of this present work" tells a history of its translation:"A noble Grecian, who riding to doe his businesse, being out of his way, came to a solitary place, where a most valiant knight of Thebes named Arnalt, having builded a darke and sad Palaice, with many of his servants, as an Heremite did dwell in continuall sighes, lamentations and mourning…." Then follows how the Greek decided to write down the story of the knight's woe and bring it to the knowledge of the world. "The which spedelie without delay was by him done in the Greek tongue; and by the excellent Maister Nicholas Herberai a Frenchman was turned into the French tongue: And (as a thing worthy to be read in every tongue) was by Bartholomew Marassi Florentine translated into the Tuscan tongue: and now out of the same tongue by Claudius Hollyband Translated into English." |
