And becau∫e the worke is ∫o prin- | cipalle that in our time, the like in all re∫pectes hath not been ∫ettte forth in our tongue, | con∫idering it in∫tructeth, and teacheth all the whole arte of Nauigation in all pointes, and | is in as like ∫orte nece∫∫ary for the Mariner… | … And bee∫ides, the | plea∫ure that I minded to doe, to the afore∫aid per∫ons, who mooued mee thereunto, as | al∫o to ∫atisffie my good and continual de∫ire, which I haue, to helpe, and bringe to light | this good and profitable arte of Nauigation, whereby all men that are de∫irous to knowe, | the ∫ecreete of this noble arte, may profite them∫elues therewith by reading it in our Eng- | li∫he tongue, e∫pecially the Pylottes, Ma∫ters, and Mariners, con∫idering their liues and | lyuings doe ∫tand there vpon. And ∫eeing as I belieue and tru∫t, they ∫hall gather much | fuite theer by, and that by little and little, the∫e ∫ciences ∫hall remaine a∫well in our coun- | tries as in any other what∫oeuer. And ∫eing this worke ∫o nece∫∫ary for the cõmon wealth, | ∫etting all other priuate bu∫ines a∫ide I tooke in hande to tran∫late this booke, being peru- | ∫ed and allowed by the chiefe Pilot, & learned Co∫mographers of the famous contractaci- | on hou∫e of Seuil for the increa∫e & knowledge of matters of Nauigation… | … From London this | fourth of Augu∫t. 1581. | Your wor∫hippes to commande. | Iohn Frampton. |

Preliminary Material Notes: In the dedication to Philip, Medina maintains that navigation is essential because: "great profite commeth thereby to all the common wealth of Christendome: And this beeing so, it appeareth that by the Nauigation, your Royall Senorie is amplified and extended into so great part of the worlde. And that whiche is newlye discouered is more then fiue thousande leagues of the Sea coaste, where doeth containe so many regions, kingdomes, and prouinces, where are founde so many nations and diuersitie of people, and many other thinges in suche sorte by good reason it is called the newe worlde. So that by meanes of the Nauigation, there hath been brought and is brought into your highnesse Countrye of Spaine, so may shippes laden with Golde and Siluer, that the same thereof cannot be accounted".
