| THE PREFACE TO | the ∫tudents of the SPA- | NISH Tongue. | …. | … for falling in | hand with it, I found it impo∫∫ible to re- | tain the name of a meere tran∫lation, | and be made perfect for the Engli∫h: | which as it differeth more from the | Spani∫h, then doth the French, ∫o it re- | quireth in ∫ome points, more rules and | ob∫eruations… | … Neither could it be directly | tran∫lated for another rea∫on, which is, | that all the Spani∫h parts, examples, and | what∫oeuer el∫e, being to cohere, and | haue as much corre∫pondency with the | Engli∫h, as it had with the French, it was | requi∫ite therein to regard onely the | Spani∫h, and wholly to neglect the | tran∫lating of the ∫aid French; which | doubtles would haue produced a great | company of errors.
